Wildflower Meadows

East Bergholt Parish Council has been advised by Babergh District Council that, due to the continued extremely hot and dry weather, they will be bringing forward the seasonal cutting of the wildflower meadow areas they manage.
The usual cutting programme would begin in late August, but following monitoring of the conditions, discussions with partners and increased awareness of the risk of field fires during this prolonged dry spell, the work will now begin from week commencing 27 July.
In many areas, the grass has already dried out significantly and is no longer providing the same level of habitat and support for wildlife. Bringing forward the cutting will help reduce fire risk, particularly in areas close to fences, homes and other vulnerable locations.
The work will take time to complete, and not all parishes will be affected as this depends on whether wildflower meadow areas are managed within that parish. More remote meadow areas will be left for longer where possible, helping to retain habitat for wildlife for as long as conditions allow.
Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils have confirmed that their biodiversity experts believe the ecological impact will be limited, with the hot weather already having accelerated the lifecycle of many wildflower species.
We appreciate that many residents value these beautiful wildflower areas and the important contribution they make to biodiversity. This decision aims to balance protecting nature with the responsibility of managing land safely during these exceptional weather conditions.
