Local Government Reorganisation Update – East Bergholt Parish Council
Published On: April 24, 2026
As Suffolk prepares to move to a three-unitary council system, replacing the current county, district and borough structure, East Bergholt Parish Council is actively preparing for the transition with a focus on protecting local interests and ensuring the parish’s voice is clearly heard
Under the new arrangements, East Bergholt will fall within the proposed Ipswich and South Suffolk authority, which brings both opportunities and challenges – particularly in relation to local planning and future development pressures

The Council supported the three-unitary option as the approach most likely to strengthen local democracy, and work is already underway to make sure parish-level perspectives remain central throughout the transition process
To help safeguard local interests, particularly around planning matters, the Council has joined the 3Valleys Group of Parish Councils and will continue to collaborate closely with neighbouring parishes to ensure residents’ concerns are effectively represented
This partnership working will be an important part of strengthening local voice and influence as the new structure takes shape
