East Bergholt Parish Council Meeting
9 February 2023
CORONATION CELEBRATIONS
1. Background
The Coronation bank holiday weekend falls on 6
th
-8
th
May. For many people living in the village
a large, informal social event in the calendar would allow residents of all ages to feel more
integrated within the community, make new friends and take pride in our village environment.
Lack of any official celebrations around the Platinum Jubilee weekend surprised some residents;
this would therefore be a valuable opportunity for residents to celebrate within their local
community.
2. Proposal
On Monday 8
th
May (bank holiday) East Bergholt Parish Council would facilitate a Coronation
Fayre at the Gandish Road sports field, with use of the facilities at Constable Hall and the sports
pavilion.
It is proposed to run the Fayre from 12-4pm, with local businesses invited to be involved.
Oranges and Lemons have declared an interest in selling some afternoon tea related food items.
There is also the option for other food vendors to be present, similar to those who attend the
annual Christmas Fayre on the sports field. Equally, there would be an option to bring picnic
food, for a big village picnic.
Both the Cricket and Tennis clubs have also confirmed interest in being included in the event
As part of the celebrations it is intended to hold a scarecrow trail, themed around the
Coronation, which would run for a week or so before, and over the bank holiday weekend itself.
The scarecrows will be mapped and placed around the village, encouraging scarecrow spotters
to be actively out ‘spotting’.
East Bergholt Primary School and East Bergholt Young Explorers (nursery) have both stated an
interest in taking part and may well run their own competitions to engage the children and
students alike.
3. Implications
A thorough clean-up operation of the sports field will be required immediately following the
event. Lack of adequate advertising and forward planning will impact attendance at the event.
4. Cost
£650 would cover some bouncy castles and entertainment for children. Grant funding is
available through SALC.
