With East Bergholt getting ready to celebrate Constable’s birthday on 11 June as part of the “In Our View” events, we’re excited to see the village filled with creative, colourful and party-themed scarecrows!

To help inspire you, here are our top tips for making a brilliant scarecrow that will stand out on the trail 

 1. Start with a strong character idea
Think “party guest”! Will your scarecrow be a DJ, a birthday guest, a dancer, a magician, or even the life and soul of the party? 

 2. Build a simple, sturdy frame
Use bamboo canes, wooden stakes or old broom handles. Make sure it’s secure enough to stand up to wind and weather 

 3. Dress to impress
Old clothes work perfectly! Bright colours, fancy dress outfits, and anything sparkly or fun will really bring your scarecrow to life 

 4. Go big on the party theme
Add balloons, bunting, hats, presents, musical instruments or confetti-style decorations for maximum celebration vibes 

 5. Add personality in the details
A painted face, silly accessories, or a themed prop can make all the difference – the more character, the better 

 6. Optional Constable-inspired twist
If you’d like, you can include a nod to John Constable – think landscapes, skies, or playful references to local scenery – but this is completely optional 

 7. Make it visible from the trail!
Position your scarecrow where it can be easily seen and enjoyed by walkers exploring the village route
