Introduction
This booklet provides information about upper and high schools in Suffolk in the 2014/2015 school year. It does not
cover independent schools. It also explains how Suffolk County Council decide who is offered a place when a school
gets too many applicants.
There is a separate directory which provides information for primary, infant, junior and middle schools.
Please read the booklet ‘Admissions to Schools in Suffolk 2014/2015’ for information on how and when to apply for a school
place. A copy is available from:

Schools in Suffolk
All schools in Suffolk are day schools for both boys and girls of all abilities. The age range of pupils at schools varies, depending
on which part of Suffolk they are in. Further information can be found in the booklet ‘Admissions to Schools in Suffolk
2014/2015’. This is available by contacting the Admissions Team or online at: www.suffolk.gov.uk/admissionstoschools.
We deal with applications for all types of schools, acting on behalf of the governors in the case of voluntary aided,
foundation/trust, academy and free schools.
Key admission dates
It is very important that you apply by the closing date. Late applications will not normally be considered until after school places
have been offered to those who applied on time.
We recommend you apply online at: www.suffolk.gov.uk/onlineadmissions.

Section 2
How we offer school places
It is important that all schools are able to provide education for their pupils in suitable accommodation, which is not
overcrowded. This means that schools can only offer a set number of places in any one year. This number is called the published
admission number (PAN), which is based on a national formula for deciding how many children can go to a school, without
causing overcrowding.
Although the PAN applies to the year of entry we would normally apply this number across all year groups in the school.
However, there may be occasions for other year groups where it is not possible to admit up to this number.
If the number of applicants is less than the PAN all applicants will be admitted. For any of your preferred schools, there may be
more applications for that school than there are places available. Suffolk County Council makes decisions about admissions for
community and voluntary controlled schools. If the number of applications for a school is greater than its PAN, we use our
oversubscription criteria to decide who gets a place.
In the case of voluntary aided schools, foundation/trust schools, academies and free schools governing bodies determine the
order in which applications should be ranked according to their oversubscription criteria. The offer of places is made on their
behalf by Suffolk County Council. For in-year applications the governing body will also advise us whether a place can be offered
in the relevant year group. We will use this information to make the offer of a place to parents/carers. However, East Bergholt
High School and Ormiston Sudbury Academy will write to you directly.
Where a voluntary aided school, foundation/trust school, academy or free school has their own admissions
oversubscription criteria this is displayed underneath the school details in this directory.
The wording in this booklet may be a summary of the full admissions policy and therefore you must refer to the school’s own full
admissions policy, which sets out how places will be prioritised. You can get a copy of the full policy from the school or online at:
www.suffolk.gov.uk/admissionstoschools.
There is a separate directory for the oversubscription criteria for primary, infant, junior and middle schools.
If you are applying for a place at a voluntary aided school, foundation/trust school, academy or free school you may
also need to complete a supplementary information form (SIF) and send it directly to the school.
How the allocation process works
Step 1 If we can meet your first preference, we will offer you a place at that school.
Step 2 If we cannot meet your first preference but can meet your second preference, we will offer you a place at that school.
For the normal year of entry only, we will also place your name on the waiting list for your first preference school.
Step 3 If we cannot meet your second preference but can meet your third preference, we will offer you a place at that
school. For the normal year of entry only, we will also place your name on the waiting list for your first and
second preference schools.
Step 4 If we cannot meet any of your preferences, we will offer you a place at your catchment area school (if you
have not included it in your preferences and if there is still a place available there) or at the next nearest
school which has a place available. This will take into consideration the availability and cost of home to
school transport.
The next nearest school is measured by walking distance. Walking distance is from the front door of the home to
the nearest school gate. Where there is more than one home within a single building (for example apartments)
we will measure from the main entrance of the building.
For the normal year of entry only, we will also place your name on the waiting list for your first, second and
third preference schools.
Section 2
6 Directory of Schools in Suffolk for High Schools for the 2014/2015school year
Admissions oversubscription criteria
If there are more applications than places available the following oversubscription criteria shows the order of priority for places
at community and voluntary controlled schools (and at those foundation/trust schools, academies and free schools where it has
been agreed that Suffolk County Council will manage their admissions arrangements).
For applications to the normal year of entry at a school, these criteria will be applied according to the circumstances existing on
or before the closing date.
We will offer you a school place on the following basis:
Children who have a statement of special educational needs which names the school must by law be offered a place at
that school.
We will treat all your preferences (up to three) as equal. We will look to see if a place is available at each of your preferences and
offer you a place at your highest preference school with a place available.
1 Looked after children (children in care) and children who were looked after, but ceased to be so because they
were adopted (or became subject to a residence order or special guardianship order).
2 Children who are brothers and sisters of, or who live as a family at the same address as, pupils who are already
at the school or who have already been offered a place, and who will still be there at the time of admission (but
not in the sixth form). Priority will be given, where necessary, to applications where there is the smallest age
gap. If you have more than one child at the school, please name the youngest one.
3 Children who are ordinarily resident in the catchment area.
Places will be allocated in the following priority order:
a. If the school is voluntary controlled, children whose parents/carers are applying on the grounds that the child
and/or the family are practising members of the Church of England. (You must provide a letter at the time of
application from a priest or minister. This letter must specifically state that you and/or your child is a
practising member of the Church of England and that you and/or your child go to church regularly, that is to
say at least once a month).
b. Children who live nearest to the school. We will measure the distance by a straight line (‘as the crow flies’).
All straight line distances are calculated electronically by Suffolk County Council using data provided jointly
by the Post Office and Ordnance Survey. The data plots the co-ordinates of each property and provides the
address-point between which the straight line distance is measured and reported to three decimal places.
Where there is more than one home within a single building (for example apartments) we will measure to a
single point within that building irrespective of where those homes are located.
4 Children who live outside the school’s catchment area in the same priority order as set out in (a) and (b) above.
Section 2
Directory of Schools in Suffolk for High Schools for the 2014/2015school year 7
Notes:
Distance tie breaker
It is possible that the PAN of the school will be reached in any one of the categories. For this reason, all applications will be
prioritised according to the rules described. Decisions will be made about the offer of places in accordance with those priorities. If
it is necessary to use a tie-breaker to distinguish between two or more applications, a distance criterion will be used. We will give
priority to the applicants who live nearest to the school as measured by a straight line.
In the unlikely event that two applicants competing for a single place at a school live the same distance from the school, the
place will be offered to one applicant on the basis of lots drawn by an officer of Suffolk County Council not involved
with admissions.
Twins, triplets and other multiple births
If the final place available at a school is offered to a twin, triplet or other multiple birth and the remaining sibling/s would
ordinarily be refused, we will offer places to the remaining sibling/s at the same school.
Waiting lists
If you apply for a school place in the normal admissions round and one or more of your preferences are refused, your child’s
name will automatically be placed on a waiting list for these schools (as described in step 2 to step 4 on page 5). Names are
placed on the waiting list in the priority order with reference to the school’s admissions oversubscription criteria.
The order of children does not remain static – as circumstances change, a child’s place on the waiting list can go up or down, for
example, due to withdrawals or additional applications.
If you change your address while your child is on a waiting list you must let us know. Please be aware that this may change your
child’s position on the waiting list, particularly if you move into or out of the school’s catchment area. Written evidence of this
will be required.
Having your child’s name on a waiting list will not affect your right to appeal for any of the schools you have been refused a
place at. See the booklet ‘Admissions to Schools in Suffolk 2014/2015’ for how to appeal.
Late applicants will be added to any waiting lists in oversubscription priority order if their parental preferences cannot be met.
If a place becomes available, we will offer it to children on the waiting list for that school in priority order. We do not offer places
on the basis of the date on which names were placed on the list.
The waiting lists will cease to operate at the end of the first full week of the spring term (Friday 9 January 2015).
Suffolk County Council does not hold waiting lists for in-year applicants. Some voluntary-aided schools, academies and free
schools may hold waiting lists throughout the year for all year groups. This information is available from the schools directly.
Further information on applying for a school place can be found in the booklet ‘Admissions to Schools in Suffolk 2014/2015’.
Making another application for a place at the same school
A parent/carer can apply for a place for their child at any time to any school outside of the normal admissions round. However, if
your application for a school place is refused, we will not determine a further application for a place in the same school in the
same academic year, unless there has been a significant change in the circumstances of the parent/carer, child or school. Such
circumstances might be a house move or a place becoming available at the school.
If there is no significant change in circumstances, you can make another application for the following academic year but this will
not normally be considered more than one term ahead of the date when you want your child to start at the school.

School details
Suffolk County Council makes decisions for community and voluntary controlled schools.
The governing bodies of voluntary aided schools, foundation/trust schools, academies and free schools determine the order in which
applications should be ranked according to their oversubscription criteria. These are known as own admission authority schools.
More information is available in the booklet ‘Admissions to Schools in Suffolk 2014/2015’.
The following pages provide alphabetical lists of Suffolk upper and high schools, sixth form colleges, special schools and pupil
referral units.
We have provided some key information about each school to help you when you are applying for a place, including:
• the school’s address • the school’s website (if they have one)
• the age range and type of school • headteacher and phone number
• specialism (if applicable)
• the published admission number (PAN) for 2014/2015. This is the number of pupils who will be allowed to join the school in
the year group.
* indicates that as the PAN for 2014/2015 is lower than the PAN for 2013/2014 you should be aware that places will be more
limited and the pattern of admissions may change.
• the sixth form PAN for 2014/2015. This is the number of students who can be admitted from outside the school to Year 12
(that is to say, not including those students who transfer from Year 11 itself).
• the school’s oversubscription criteria, if it is different to Suffolk County Council’s oversubscription criteria which is on page 6
of this directory.
The wording in this booklet may be a summary of the full admissions policy and therefore you must refer to the school’s own full
admissions policy which sets out how places will be prioritised. You can get a copy of the full policy from the school or online at:
www.suffolk.gov.uk/admissionstoschools.
We have also included information relating to the on time applications we received for the normal year of entry to the school in
September 2013 (2013/2014 school year). This is to help you judge whether or not your application for a school place in the entry
year might be successful, when you are filling in the application form. It includes:
• the published admission number (PAN) for 2013/2014
• the number of pupils on roll at the school in May 2013
• the number of applications received by the closing date. This is the number of applications for which no higher preference
school was offered. It may include second and third preferences as well as first preferences. The figure is intended to give you
an idea of the demand for places at the school. Please note that if you only apply for schools that have previously had more
applications than places, there is a possibility that you will not be offered a place at any of them.
• the number of places that were actually allocated at the school to on time applicants
• the number of on time applications that were refused
• the criterion under which the last child was admitted to oversubscribed schools. Where schools were not oversubscribed all
applicants were admitted. Where schools were oversubscribed, the oversubscriptions criteria was applied and the cut-off point
is indicated.
Notes:
If a website address is not included with a school’s information you may be able to access their details at:
www.school-portal.co.uk.
We have not included information on independent schools.
The information is correct as at August 2013.

2014/2015 Oversubscription criteria:
If the Academy is oversubscribed, after the admission of pupils with Statements of Special Educational Needs where the school is named
in the Statement, priority for admission will be given to those children who meet the criteria set out below, in priority order:
1. Looked after children;
2. Children who have an exceptional medical or social need requiring attendance at East Point Academy rather than any other
school. Such needs must be supported, at the time of application, by reports or letters from suitable professionals such as
GPs, consultants or social workers. Circumstances cannot be taken into account unless information is provided at the time of
application and failure to provide such information at that stage may therefore affect whether or not the children are
allocated places at East Point Academy. All information submitted will be regarded as confidential.
3. Children who are ordinarily residentin the catchment area.
Places will be allocated in the following priority order:
a. Where the East Point Academy is the most suitable school to meet the child’s medical needs. (You must provide a letter at the time of
application from an NHS professional, which sets out the particular reasons why East Point Academy is the most suitable school and
the difficulties that would be caused if the child had to attend another school).
b. Children who are brothers and sisters of, or who live as a family at the same address as, pupils who are already at the school or who
have already been offered a place, and who will still be there at the time of admission (but not in the sixth form).
c. Children who live nearest to the school. We will measure the distance by a straight line (‘as the crow flies’) from the front gate of the
school to the front door of the home that was on the original application for a place (where a child lives with parents with shared
responsibility for part of a week, the home address shall be judged to be where the child wakes for the majority of school days).

If it is necessary to use a tie-breaker to distinguish between two or more applications, a distance criterion will be used. We will give
priority to the applicants who live nearest to the school as measured by a straight line from the school site that was on the original
application for a place.

2014/2015 Oversubscription criteria:
After the admission of students with statements of Special Educational Needs where Saxmundham Free School is named on the
statement, the criteria will be applied in the order in which they are set out below:
1. A “looked after child” or a child who was previously looked after but immediately after being looked after became subject to
an adoption, residence, or special guardianship order. A “looked after child” is a child who is; (a) in the care of a LA, or (b)
being provided with accommodation by a local authority in the exercise of their social services functions (“looked after
children” as defined in section 22(1) of the Children Act 1989).
2. Children with a sibling attending Saxmundham Free School at the time of application. A Sibling is defined in these
arrangements as children who live as brother or sister in the same house, including natural brothers or sisters, adopted
siblings, stepbrothers or sisters and foster brothers and sisters.
3. Other children by distance from Saxmundham Free School, with priority for admission given to children who live nearest to
the school as the crow flies. Distances are measured between the two full UK postcodes of the student’s home and the
school postcode using a website that calculates the distance up to three decimal places between the two points.
4. Random allocation will be used as a tie-break in category ‘3’ above to decide who has highest priority for admission if the
distance between two children’s homes and the school is the same.
2. In the event of oversubscription, applications from within the priority admission area(from the named partner schools)
will be considered first and determined using the following criteria:
a. Children with a brother or sister (sibling) attending Samuel Ward at the time of application with a reasonable expectation
they will be attending at the start of the new academic year. Attendance at Samuel Ward will include attendance at the
Sixth Form.
b. Children attending one of the named partner schools who do not have a brother or sister (sibling) attending Samuel Ward.
3. Applications from children who do not attend a named partner schoolwill be considered if there are still places available
and will be determined by the following criteria:
a. Children with a brother or sister (sibling) attending Samuel Ward at the time of application with a reasonable expectation
they will be attending at the start of the new academic year.
b. The proximity criteria described below in ‘Tie-Breaker’.
Tie-breaker: In the event of oversubscription in any category above, priority will be determined by the proximity of the child’s
home to Samuel Ward by a straight-line distance (as the crow flies).

2. Relevant “Looked after Children” (Children in Care) and children, who were looked after, but ceased to be so because they
were adopted (or became subject to a residence order or special guardianship order),” for whom the academy is
deemed appropriate.
3. Children with a sibling, who remain on the academy roll at the start of the new academic year and who live within the
designated catchment area.
4. Children on roll at catchment primary schools, who live in the designated catchment area.
5. Children who live nearest to the academy within the designated catchment area. The distance will be measured by a straight
line (“as the crow flies”).
6. Children with a sibling, who remain on the academy roll at the start of the new academic year and who live outside of the
designated catchment area.
7. Children on roll at feeder primary schools and who live nearest to the academy outside of the designated catchment area of
the academy. In this event the criteria will be the proximity of the child’s home to the academy, using a straight line distance
from the centre of the academy. Distance will be measured by a straight line (“as the crow flies”). Those living nearest to the
academy will be given priority. In this case proof of residence may be required.
8. Priority will be given to the children of those employees of the academy who have been employed at the academy for more
than two years or who have been recruited to an area of skills shortage.
9. In the rare event of a tie-breaker situation, the random allocation will be supervised by someone independent from the
school. For this academy such a process would be undertaken by the local authority.

CAF1
Normal year of entry application
form for the 2014/2015 school year
Guidance notes
!
!
!
!
It is important that you read the following notes before completing
your application:
Note 1 – Looked after children or previously looked after children
Looked after children (children in care) are defined as being subject to a care order, an interim care
order or accommodated by the local authority. This also includes previously looked after children
(children who were looked after, but ceased to be so because they were adopted or became subject
to a residence order or special guardianship order). Applicants must provide evidence with their
application that their child was previously looked after in the form of an adoption order, residence
order or special guardianship order.
!
Note 2 – Child’s current address
Please give your child’s current address. If you are planning to move house, please attach details of
your future address and moving date, if known. If you want your future address to be the one
considered as part of your application, you must attach written evidence that you are legally
committed to this move. This could be proof of exchange of contracts, a signed letting/tenancy
agreement confirming your new address, an assignment order that declares a relocation date and a
unit postal address or quartering area address for a service child, or, for returning UK service/crown
servant families, proof of the posting. Please contact the Admissions Team for further details.
!
Note 3 – Parental responsibility
For births registered in England and Wales, parental responsibility is automatically given to the
child’s mother from birth. A child’s father will have parental responsibility if:
• he was married to the child’s mother when the child is born (even if later divorced or
separated)
• the child was born after 1 December 2003, and he is named on the birth certificate
• a parental responsibility agreement is obtained from a court or by agreement with the mother.
Please provide a copy of any appropriate court orders or residence orders with this
application.

!
Important
You MUST return this form to the Admissions Team to reach us by the closing date of:
Thursday 31 October 2013 – for upper or high school applications
Wednesday 15 January 2014 – for infant, primary, junior or middle school
applications
We do not acknowledge receipt of paper applications and strongly suggest
that you get proof of postage.
!
!
Note 4 – Private fostering
If you are caring for someone else’s child for more than 28 days, you do not have parental
responsibility for them and you are not a relative such as a grandparent, brother, sister, uncle or
aunt (whether full blood, half blood or by marriage or civil partnership
private fostering. It is a legal requirement that you contact Suffolk County Council on: 0808 800
4005 or email: customer.first@suffolk.gov.uk.
!
Note 5 – Transport
If your child is given a place at an out-catchment school of your preference, you will have to get your
child to and from school and pay for any transport needed. We would only provide transport to an
out-catchment preferred school if it is the next nearest school to your home with places available,
taking into consideration the availability and cost of home to school transport, and your child is either
(a) under eight years of age and you live two miles or more from that school or (b) is eight or over
and you live at least three miles from that school.
Please note if you receive free home to school transport, your child is under eight years of age and
you live more than 2 miles but less than 3 miles from the school allocated, transport will end at the
end of the academic year following their eighth birthday.
Note 6 – Siblings
It is important that you provide this information because it can affect your child’s priority or offer of a
school place. You should check the definition of a sibling for the school you are applying for in the
Directory of Schools in Suffolk. For any community and voluntary controlled schools please name
the youngest sibling who is at or about to start at each preferred school. This does not include
siblings in the sixth form. You should also include the sibling if you are applying for an associated
infant/junior school.
Note 7 – Voluntary controlled schools
If your application for a place at a voluntary controlled school is based on religious grounds, you
must attach a letter from a priest or minister specifically stating that you and/or your child is a
practising member of the Church of England and go to church at least once a month. You will also
need to tick the box on the application form to confirm this has been included.
Note 8 – Voluntary aided, academies and free schools
If you are applying for a place at a Church of England or Catholic voluntary aided school, you must
also get a supplementary information form (SIF
online at www.suffolk.gov.uk/admissionstoschools. This needs to be filled in and taken or sent
to the voluntary aided school direct. You may also need to complete a SIF for an academy or free
school (please check these school’s individual policies to confirm if this is a requirement

Comments, compliments
and complaints
Have your say
Our aim is to make sure that your child gets the best education possible. If you have any comments, complaints or compliments
about any area of your child’s education, it is best to discuss it with the person concerned as soon as possible. If you prefer, you
can write to them. If there is a problem about something that is wrong at school, you should speak or write to the member of
staff or the headteacher about it. Most problems can be sorted out without taking any further action. However, if you are not
happy with the outcome, ask the school for details of their policy on how to make a complaint. In most cases, the headteacher
and governors are responsible for putting matters right.
If your complaint relates to a service you have received from Suffolk County Council, other than an issue arising in a maintained
school, you should first try to sort it out with the member of staff or team concerned. If you do not want to do this, you can
contact Customer Rights on: 01473 260711 or email: customerrights@suffolk.gov.uk.
If you are happy with our service and the system or have views about this booklet Customer Rights would also be very pleased
to hear from you.
We have been careful to make sure that the information in this publication is accurate at the time of printing.
We cannot rule out, however, the need for changes between now and the start of the 2014/2015 school year. Any
changes will be up-dated at: www.suffolk.gov.uk/admissionstoschools.
