EAST BERGHOLT BURIAL GROUNDS COMMITTEE ANNUAL REPORT
FOR YEAR 2025/2026

As we approach the end of another year for the Burial Grounds Committee, and my second year
as Chair, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the year gone by.
Overall, it has been a quieter year for the Committee. The most recent meeting in April 2026
was cancelled due to a lack of business. However, this does not fully reflect the activity across
the year, and there have been several notable matters, including:

Rabbit-Proof Fencing
The Committee agreed to the installation of rabbit-proof fencing following concerns raised by
our groundsmen regarding damage caused by rabbits. The fencing will be installed in stages.

Mole Activity
Moles have also presented challenges this year, with increased burrowing activity leaving the
grounds dotted with molehills, creating a potential hazard. This issue has been addressed in as
humane and minimally intrusive a manner as possible.

Fallen Tree
In January, following heavy storms, a tree on land adjoining the cemetery was uprooted and fell
across the rear boundary of the burial grounds. This has since been dealt with appropriately.

Burial Fees
Burial fees were reviewed by the Council and it was agreed that they will remain unchanged for
the coming year.

I would like to close this report by once again thanking all members of the Committee for your
continued cooperation, support, and guidance, it is greatly appreciated. I would also like to
extend my sincere thanks to our groundsmen, Simon Rothwell and Barrie Pearson, for their
tireless work in maintaining the burial grounds to such a high standard. Their efforts are often
recognised and appreciated by members of the public.
Finally, I would like to thank both the Clerk and Assistant Clerk for their continued support
throughout the year.
On a lighter note, I am pleased to report that the Burial Grounds Committee still holds the record
for the shortest meeting—our April 2025 meeting opened at 7:31pm and closed at 7:36pm!
