East Bergholt Parish Council remains very concerned about road and pavement safety across the village, and we’d like to thank residents who have helped us collate accurate information about accidents at the Gandish Road/Straight Road junction with the B1070.

Our Chair of the Roads, Footpaths & Flatford Committee, John Price, has used this information to highlight concerns about under-reporting of accidents at this particularly dangerous junction, which has seen an average of around one serious accident a month.

Suffolk County Council Highways has agreed to review the accident data and work with the Parish Council to look at measures that could help improve safety at this location.

Our Roads, Footpaths & Flatford Committee is also continuing discussions with Highways about opportunities for 20mph speed limits and other safety measures elsewhere in the village. Priority areas identified include the B1070, particularly around the High School, and Hadleigh Road past the Primary School.

It is important to clarify that responsibility for road safety measures sits with Suffolk County Council, while the Parish Council’s role is to keep raising these concerns and pressing for action.

We know we have not always been successful in securing sustained attention from Highways, but we remain committed to working with them and continuing to push for practical solutions to improve road safety in East Bergholt.
