ITEM 10 – REPORTS FROM COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVES ON OUTSIDE BODIES

Constable Hall Management Committee – Councillor Price
It has been a fantastic summer to remember John Constable and the Memorial Hall has
been right in the centre of the celebrations.
In June the actual week of his 250 anniversary of his birth, the village put on a week of
events in the Hall, including but not limited to concerts, a day course on how to paint
Constable clouds and a special humorous play by our very own theatre group, charting the
life and achievements of the great painter. I understand the summer fair which followed was
the best ever.
July saw the BBC coming to East Bergholt when the Hall was able to host a live broadcast of
“Any Questions”. It was beautifully done and six topical questions were discussed by the
panel. Where else but in East Bergholt can you meet a BBC production team, Alex Forsyth
the presenter, three Baronesses and a prominent journalist from a national newspaper.
August saw the Hall handed over to Babergh/Mid Suffolk District Councils to present a
“mixed reality” event over seven days, where you could view the great painter’s
masterpieces in a gallery setting. Not only was it possible to be shown where in East
Bergholt they were painted but the lucky visitors were able to view and zoom into the
paintings and even pick up a couple of wooden carving works made by a young John
Constable. Well done for everyone involved. We now just need to obtain the remaining
funds to ensure the hall will be available for future generations.
East Bergholt Community Land Trust – Councillor Davies
I have nothing to report at the moment. The CLT are looking forward to meeting parish
councillors hopefully within the next month or so. As always, the trustees are looking for
opportunities to acquire or build homes for those in our community who cannot get social
housing within the village because others from outside the village have a greater need for
housing. There is one possibility at the moment but that has to be confidential.
East Bergholt/Barbizon Twinning Association – Councillor Miller
Barbizon Village will be launching their twin community art project on 20
th
September. They
will be painting Golding Constable’s Kitchen Garden which is the twin painting to our own
Golding Constable’s Flower Garden community painting which is due to be completed at EB
Primary School on 17
th
September. Representatives of EB Parish Council, Community
Council and Twinning Association will be travelling to Barbizon to be at their launch.

East Bergholt PACE – Councillor Davies
EB PACE will be showing the National Emergency Briefing on 11 September at the
Constable Hall. Headed by Chris Packham this is a campaign to put pressure on our
politicians to address the dire consequences of not adapting to and mitigating climate
change and of failing to reduce carbon emissions. We have already sold a lot of tickets.
There will be a discussion afterwards. Our MP and County Councillor were invited however
they declined the invitation. The leader of Suffolk County Council was also invited but he did
not grant us the courtesy of a response.
The group is going to host an event in November where householders using renewable
energy sources can talk to fellow residents about their experiences. Some members are
undertaking training on how to increase biodiversity in our communities and hope to get
started on writing an implementing a biodiversity action plan which will involve residents.
PACE, along with the Orvis Lane Green Group, has written to United Charities again to ask
whether land at the bottom of Orvis Lane could be rented to the group for a community open
space/orchard/food production.
We need a communications person. We are currently managing, however someone to do
social media/parish magazine etc would be a welcome addition to our team.
