Protecting East Bergholt’s Heritage ![]()
The Parish Council has been working closely with Babergh District Council on a joint Conservation Area Appraisal. An initial report has now been presented to the Council.
The aim of the report is to identify and conserve the village’s most significant landscapes, many of which inspired John Constable’s iconic paintings. ![]()
Currently, the conservation area is limited to an L-shaped zone through the village centre, excluding Flatford and other historically and naturally important areas.
The draft report, first prepared in October 2021, proposes extending protection to key areas including:
Flatford
Hadleigh Road
Gaston Street
The Donkey Track
This would preserve not only historic buildings but also trees, hedgerows, and open fields that define East Bergholt’s rural character.
The Parish Council will continue to work with Babergh to refine the proposals before they are open to public consultation in the new year, giving residents a valuable opportunity to share their views before any final decisions are made. ![]()
