JOB DESCRIPTION
Cemetery Grounds Person

Key Information:

• The Parish Council will consider both an independent contractor or an employee for this
position.
• An Independent contractor would be paid £9,400 and must be able to evidence Public
Liability Insurance of at least £1,000,000.
• An employee would be paid a similar sum on a local government pay scale at point 10
(£28,835 per annum, pro rata).
• This is a job description for the closed Churchyard and Cemetery Grounds person.
• The post holder will be provided with safety equipment, which will need to be
maintained by the post holder. Any issues or concerns with safety equipment, or any
additional need for equipment will need to be reported to the Parish Council Office.

• The post holder will be expected to operate machinery in the form of the below:
o Petrol strimmer
o 4-wheel steer garden tractor
o Rotary mower
o Leaf blower
• All machinery related to the maintenance of the church yard and cemetery is stored in
the storage sheds at the Cemetery Lane entrance of the cemetery and the churchyard.
• Equipment must be stored away safely after use.
• The post will require 16 hours per week over 2-3 days during the summer months and 10
hours per week in the winter months (at the contractor’s/employee’s discretion).
• Pay will be based on an annual sum paid evenly over 12 monthly payments.

Job Description:

The post holder will be required to undertake the following tasks:

• Seasonal grounds maintenance of cemetery and church yard.
• Work efficiently without direct supervision to the satisfaction of the Burial Grounds
Committee, which meets 4 times per year.
• Collect any petrol or fuel required for the equipment from the ‘KMC’ garage on Heath
Road. The Parish Council has an account with the Garage, which will be settled directly.
• Purchase any equipment needed to carry out minor repairs, this can be claimed back
directly from the Parish Council.

• Arrange more major maintenance and servicing in line with guidance from suppliers,
Sproughton Garden Machinery.
• During the summer months, it is estimated that the maintenance work will take between
two and three days per week. During the winter this time will be less and will be subject
to weather conditions. However, both areas will need to be kept tidy and orderly all year
round.
• Keep areas free of litter and debris.
• Trim Hedges and shrubs to allow safe access to areas.
• The grass around memorial stones will need to be maintained three to four times per
year with care.
• Condition of headstones will need to be monitored to ensure that they are safe and not
requiring maintenance. Any headstones that have deteriorated in condition and become
dangerous as a result need reporting to the Parish office.
• Fortnightly waste collections need to be monitored to ensure that we have enough
storage space for garden and household waste.
• New graves should be levelled after six months. This also includes seeding the areas
once they have been flattened.
