BELFAST (12A) (98 minutes)

We can wholeheartedly recommend this warm, funny, poignant film based on director Kenneth Branagh's childhood in west Belfast. Set in the 1960s, the young Buddy finds himself in the middle of the conflict between militant protestants who want to expel Catholics living in the area and those living in his street, including his family, who have been co-existing peacefully for years. The politics are the background. The real story is about Buddy and his family. The film was nominated for seven Oscars and won the Best Original Screenplay award this year. It also won the Bafta for Outstanding British Film. Starring Judi Dench and Jamie Dornan.

As Kenneth Branagh says "This story is the search for joy and hope in the face of violence and loss". The Irish Times called it 'Gorgeous'
